The Story of Tokuji Yamashita
The following are links to articles about the life of Tokuji Yamashita, an immigrant from Japan who arrived in America
in 1893 when he was eighteen years old. Yamashita was an early Civil Rights activist, who deeply believed in
the principle of "equality" in the U.S. Constitution. However, he was barred
from practicing law, eventhough he graduated from a law school in the U.S. and passed the bar exam, because he
was "a member of the yellow race."
